Evaluation

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

From the two different magazine covers above you can see how I tried to use some of the effects that were used on the George Clooney magazine with my Dukebox edition. The main two similarities between the covers is the font in the background of the image this gives the reader an idea of what is in the edition of the magazine but in a different way than normal. Esquire have used a variety of different sizes and fonts which will draw the readers eye towards it whereas on mine I choose to have the font slightly bigger at the top then to become a little bit smaller each line that we go down, also esquire did not have a sub heading for George Clooney across the image of him they’ve put the image just to the left of his head. I thought that it would work better if I were to put the sub heading on top of the image in the same colour as the banner at the top of the page.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
I would say that product as a magazine does not particularly aim a one social group, but is more towards the alternative indie, the reason I said this is because there will be some other music genre’s involved but they will not be the main focus off the magazine. I have an exclusive interview with Pat Mills and how band member Harvey turned to the drink when times got hard for him but they pulled through with the help of everyone close to him.  My magazine Dukebox has the reviews of latest gigs which have been and then also has some forthcoming events in, there is a small section for the breaking news in the world whether that be music relevant or not. This is because I think that the audience that I aiming to attract would find this part of the magazine use full, younger people are never stopping so a small update will be easy to read while on the bus to college, eating breakfast before work etc. I took some photos for the magazine but I thought that it worked better with the single man from the band, because the images that I used were of two people so would not as worked as well, I still used one of the images for the contents page of the different band Eskimo Clan.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Institution that might publish my product would be Hearst Corporation, an American media company that is privately based in the United States, being one the largest publishing companies in world publishing 14 us titles and over 200 international titles as well 20 titles from the united kingdom. The only reason for me choosing this company over any other is that it published Esquire the magazine that I took ideas from and put them onto my magazine. But then again It could also be linked to IPC the leading UK publishing company “IPC Media produces over 60 iconic media brands, with print alone reaching almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men – almost 26 million UK adults – while our websites collectively reach over 20 million users every month IPC diverse print and digital portfolio offers something for everyone, with a focus on three core audiences: men, mass market women and up market women” because of the content that is inside of the magazine, IPC publish music magazine NME which does really well in the United Kingdom so I think with the mix of the esquire cover and then the content inside the magazine being similar to the NME magazine.
4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
My target audience for my magazine is going to be mixed gender, aged 14-24years. This is a young audience to aim at but should be easier because I fit in to this band so I know what people want to be reading, seeing because I'm around these people because this is my age group. Therefore the content of my magazine would not involve to much text because people of this age do not want to be reading that much, there will be reviews on latest bands and interviews where we will find out about all the secrets that know one knows making people want to by your magazine to read into them.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?
To attract in the audience for my magazine I researched a lot of different magazines that had already been released, looking for what the magazines, which are successful, do different to and un-successful magazine. There were loads of magazines to choose from but how did I know that the magazine cover had been successful. The main things that I looked for in a magazine were a clear title so the reader would get used to the layout of the magazine and also the layout was simple so would also make it a bit easier.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
From constructing this product over around 2 month period I have learnt a few things about the technology that can and is used to create this sort of product. My magazine consisted of very basic skills that I used with Photoshop, which is a Photo editing program released by CSS. This is the only editing programme that I used to create effects on the images I took. For my image of Pat on the front cover I started of by using the magic tool which if you click on the background, depending on the tolerance of the picture. I found out this can be very frustrating as I had to keep changing that tolerance so that it would not cut out parts of the photo that I wanted to edit. Once that I was happy with the line round the edge of photo that would erase the background from the image then I could delete that and check for any bits around the outside that had not been deleted. This is important because there still may be parts of the background on the image and when you drag the photo onto your other canvas then will stand out. So I went round the image with the eraser tool checking for little parts of the background also smoothing of the edges of the photo because some of it looked quite rough. This took some time to get this all how I wanted it to look but I got there in the end. After cutting out the background from the image I was going to have a play around with the brightness, contrast etc after playing around with some of the different settings that are available. I decided to make my images black and white because I thought that it fitted in well with the colour scheme that I used which is very basic.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?
Looking back at the whole time I have been designing and changing the magazine to get it how I wanted it, one of the big points that I found quite time consuming was the title of the magazine. If you have watched the pitch then you will see that I thought of a name but was soon to realise that I had made a spelling mistake, but thought this could be good because if it is different then it might appeal to the audience which I am aiming at who will generally go for the unusual content. I thought that it was spelt “Dukebox” but you already know its spelt “Jukebox” but decided to keep the name of the magazine, I had already put together a few models for what I wanted the header to look like.  The prelim also gave me an idea of the time scale that was going to be needed for the final design of my magazine because Photoshop can be very time consuming and frustrating trying to edit an image. This made it easier because I planned out when I needed to of have the photos taken by to allow me enough time on the changes that I was going to make.

about the test shots

Below are a few of the test shots that I took for the mock up of my magazine,
I will be not using Pat for the final shots though, because i'm going to use a 3 man
band for mine. When I put the pictures in to my magazine I put the images into
photoshop and cut them down to fir the page, as well playing around with the
brightness/ contrast once I was happy with that I decided to put my colours in black
and white it was easier to bring Pat out a bit more than the background.

I think that this front cover looks okay, but i really
don't like the look of the contents page that i have
made, when making my final design for the contents
page I don't want my final peice to look quite like
that. Im hoping to create a page that is like one of the
mock ups. so will have to take some pictures to match it.

more contents

This double page spread of Mumford and the Sons was
created using the image that spread across both of the
pages so that the image is clearly visible when you open the
magazine. Because the image is consisting of a lot of dark colour
they have put the header in a very bold font in white. This will
help the font stand out. On this double page spread there doesn't
seem to be that much writing whereas on my double page i think
that i'm going to try and get a lot more information.

contento

This double page has the image of lilly allen that takes up
most of one of the sides attracts the eye but then the there
is the quote that has been wrote in full caps, but has smaller
and larger letters this makes it stand out to the reader, who
will then read this and want to read more. At the bottom
of the page there is 4 columns of font, this is the
interview. These columns look quite smart so I may
choose to use this sort of look. For my double page
i'm going to have the band on one page then the article on
the other then will have to create a header that will attract
the reader as well.

something a bit different

Here I have found a few contents pages from the Magazine Esquire, these are fairly unique there are not many magazines that have designed there contents page to look like this. They have a element of blandness though but i think that it looks good, plain white background with a image displaying the main focus of the magazine.

article

Deciding on what to write for my article is quite difficult, and time consuming.
I've started to write my article where It will be an Interview where the reader
will have a short introduction on the band. This will include how the band
began, I choose to say that they were a band who met when they were younger,
so they've been around each other for many years. But there is a twist to the band
after things were going well un till bass player Brendan was faced with a drinking
problem that could challenge the group. This could be a good question how did
you manage cope with such a good friend and colleague becoming addicted to
drinking. I'm just trying to think of some ideas for the article, most magazines for
the introduction then having question answer after which is what I have choose
 to go for.

mock front cover

I've been working on this mock, this was the sort of thing that I would look to make if i was going to have the single artist on the front of my cover. I like it at the moment but not sure if it looks to bland.

final shots

I'm still unsure on everyone that i'm going to be using but I have a few people who
said that they were happy to show in my shots, I'm hoping to use an outdoor location
with the member sitting on a step or bench giving it a relaxed look, also trying to get
something going on in the background similar to the NME edition below but then I will
also take some shots that will be easy for me to edit them then I can create a background using Photoshop. This could take a long time though and be quite difficult.

I D E A

band profile

My Band is going to consist of 4 members I intend to model it around The Brighton based Maccabees are the sort of image that I am looking to achieve in my band they currently have 2 albums released including Colour it in, being the debut album and  Wall of Arms. But Orlando thought that Colour it in was a collection of songs put together rather than feeling like an album. For the while The Maccabees are signed to record company Fiction Records, who also have signed Crystal Castles, Stone Roses, Athlete, Elbow and White Lies. The band includes 5 Orlando Weeks, Hugo White, Felix White, Rupert Jarvis and Sam Doyle. Orlando with his unique way of dress. I think that I could reach my target audience if I achieved this sort of look because I am aiming to target 16-27 mixed gender. I think this would work because a lot of younger lads are trying to achieve the dress sense or Orlando, who will be seen as a role model by these young people. Also I think that it would work because a lot of young girls like the music that is made by the maccabees but more influential most young girls find Orlando attractive. The members of my band are  lead singer, guitarist then there will be a drummer, bass player and another guitarist. They have all been friends since they were toddlers. So the band is really close, but they only started playing music together when they were 15 now they are 21 so have been playing together for 3 years, but lead singer, guitarist Harvey has been playing for another 2 years, part of another band but he decided to start new the new band with his friends. Things have been going really well for the Durham based band. They've been playing some local gigs around Tyneside, they have also been reviewed my music magazine NME. This gave the band inspiration to keep on plugging through, they haven't had a easy 3 years with the Drummer having an alcohol addiction, but been to rehab for a year and is now back on track.

Interviews

I've just been looking at some magazine interviews in Kerrang, I quickly
noticed that they stick to the Interviwer asks the questions then they have the
band answer. This is probably because the interviewer will have been given some
model questions from someone highly involved in the magazine, then they will have re
worded the questions but to make it sound more interesting, but to get the same answer.
There is normally a question on how the band get along ? or something along theese
lines. This is so that they can try and give the reader a bit of in sight in to the bands that
thay like. This is why they would of brougth the magazine.

how my pitch went

I didn't think that I prepared it as well as I could of. I missed
the lesson where the majority of the class did there pitch so
was maybe had an advantage because I had longer to prepare, but
ob the on the other hand could be a disadvantage because I couldn't
see what other people had done. The animoto that I had made for
my pitch went okay and people pretty much understood in what I am
trying to acheive with my magazine. Apart from that I made a mistake with
the title of my magazine, I spelt in 'Dukebox' where it should of been
'Jukebox' this was a school boy error on my behalf. There was a few a
questions that I was asked, on of them including 'What will your new's
feed be about' I replied 'The main part of the news will be based on reviews
of new local bands, also there will be reviews on recent gigs that have been
 played in the area.'

the pitch

idea

Even though this is not animated I really like the idea
of this font for my magazine and i think that i am going to use this unless
I have a drastic change of thought. It looks pretty cool and is not
to much so think i'm going to use it. This will probably
be a different colour though to match the colour scheme that i decide to use.

new masthead?

After looking at a few of the front covers of the Complex magazine
I really like the animated font that they have used on the front on some of
them, i'm thinking about having a go at designing a font that is almost
animated. I think that this would look good on the front of my magazine, but
i've got to be careful that it is not to similar.

Monday, 10 January 2011

After looking at some magazine names I had the idea to  call my magazine "Dukebox"
I don't really know the reasoning behind this but i liked the name, I came up with a few
draft ideas of what it could look like on my magazine. heres the first design.

This first design is very basic but i think it could work if was given a bit of colour, but i
think that for the final design I would want a font that flowed and had a bit more
character to it like a duke box. Here was an idea

Yet again this looks okay but I wouldn't really be that happy with it on
my final draft of the magazine. I think that i like the font but just not to sure
on the colour. I'm going to try make it a bit more bolder.

This is the final design that i have created and i'm pretty happy. It will hopefully
stand out to someone searching for a magazine. also i don't think it is to much.

Looking back on my prelim magazine that I made and designed
you can see that I kept to the basic colour schemes of black,
white and red. Even though I was happy with this at the time, now looking at
it looks almost bland and could of done
with something else on there to brighten it up whether this being that the picture was not
black and white or I added in some more detail. I think I probably should
of put something within in the background so when creating my final magazine
cover i'm gonna try and get something that can occupy the background.

The contents page I wasn't that pleased with and didn't spend as much
time as what I wanted as I rushed it. I think that it looked very bland
and there was nothing to it. Next time I will add in some other features like
a bar where you can scan through what is in the whole of the
magazine by just looking at it. There wasn't much to my
contents page other than a couple of pictures and a head mast
saying that it was the contents page.
